A Family-Owned Historic Home Renovation Company Steeped in Tradition
Our fondness for historic properties is practically hereditary, stemming from even before husband and wife Joe and Mary Thompson founded Architectural Craftsmen.
Mary’s grandfather and great grandfather were builders who worked with prominent Kansas City developer J.C. Nichols in the 1940s and 50s. It was because of their legacy that she became so fascinated with area architecture. In historic home renovation projects we complete to this day, we follow one of her family’s traditions that’s been passed down generations, leaving behind a new broom and dustpan for good luck.
Joe grew up on a farm, where he learned to construct structures with purpose. After attending carpentry school, he studied architecture at Kansas State University, where he met Mary, who was a design student at the time. When they bought their first home together, a Baldwin City, Kansas, Queen Anne Victorian beauty built in 1910, they rehabbed it from top to bottom while Joe finished his degree. It was this labor of love that motivated them to maintain the integrity of other older buildings.
This commitment continues even now. Our team of craftspeople are driven to carry on what started with just Joe and Mary and achieve gorgeous results that bring out the soul of a property.
