Harmonizing Functional Living Space With 1920s Historic Charm
Our clients discovered that a prior addition to their Kansas City shirtwaist home had worn out its welcome in function and style. We reimagined their cramped 1990s family room and kitchen with an expansive, open layout for entertaining and family gatherings.
While removing a wall, we found we had to install a structural ceiling beam that was slightly exposed below the ceiling plane. We saw this as an opportunity, building an oak box beam around the exposed area, enhancing it with period-appropriate trim and crown molding. To further unify our new concept with the home’s historic character, we selected vintage fixtures and materials, down to the porcelain handles in the powder room, kitchen tiles, and cabinetry stain.
At the project’s completion, our new layout and design looked like an original part of this historic home, while providing the modern functionality our client desired.
